RLSS Pool Lifeguard Award

Target Audience:
This course is aimed at members of staff who need to obtain Lifeguarding skills for indoor and out door swimming pools; complying with the requirements of paragraph 193 of “Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools”

Course Registration Period:
28 days.

Entry Requirements:
Candidates must:
- Demonstrate that you’re fit and healthy
- Jump or dive into the pool in deep water
- Swim 50 meters in 1 minute or less
- Swim 100 meters continually on the front and then on the back
- Tread water in deep water for 30 seconds
- Surface dive to the deepest part of the pool
- Climb out of the pool unaided, without using steps or a ladder

Target Groups:
Members of the public and Members of staff at a swimming pool that are able to act as a pool lifeguard, trained in pool rescue, CPR techniques and aquatic first aid, competent to deal with poolside emergencies. In accordance with section 193 of “Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools”.

Numbers of Students:
4 Minimum, 12 Maximum.

39 hours

9.00am – 6.00pm

The Qualification:

Unit 1 – The Principles of Lifesaving and Swimming Pool Supervision
Unit 2 – The Application of Supervision and Rescue in a Swimming Pool

Course Content:
- The Designs & Risks of Swimming Pools
- Supervising Special Equipment and Activities
- Normal Operating Plans
- The Lifeguard – Role
- Health & Safety
- Pool Rescue Techniques
- Resuscitation
- First Aid

Assessment:
There are four main sections to be assessed in Unit 1
- Theory (Oral Questions)
- In – water rescue and Spinal Injury Management (Practical, Pool)
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (Practical)
- First Aid (Practical)
- There are seven main sections to be assessed in Unit 2 by means of a short multi choice paper.
- The Lifeguard & the Law
- The Swimming Pool and the Role of the Lifeguard Normal Operating Plans
- Emergency Action Plans
- Provision and Use of Play Equipment in Swimming Pools
- Diving and Jumping in Swimming Pools
- Water Feature

Course Materials Provided:
“The Lifeguard Manual”

Important:
Regular on – going training and practice is essential; the RLSS record sheet and check sheet are provided to record regular training.

Validation of Certification:
2 full years from the assessment date, if successful at the conclusion of the assessment.
