Principles of COSHH

Target group: This course is aimed at those who use substances hazardous to health at work and introduces students to the hazards associated with those substances, the risks and controls available and what to expect from a COSHH assessment.

Student Numbers: 2 minimum, 12 maximum

Number of Hours: 3 hours

Course Content: The COSHH training programme aims to promote awareness of the full range of substances hazardous to health.

  • Definition and types of substances hazardous to health
  • Health effects of hazardous substances and their causes
  • COSHH assessment and control options
  • Responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999

Syllabus:

  • Explain what is meant by the term “ substances hazardous to health” and give examples
  • Explain how hazardous substances can cause ill – health and injury and give examples
  • State the different ways by which hazardous substances may be identified
  • State the principles for controlling substances hazardous to health and apply these in a practical context
  • Demonstrate a general understanding of the value and purpose of conducting a COSHH assessment and what employees can expect of such assessments
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the main provisions of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations 1999

Course Materials: Course Handouts

Assessment: Short Multi – Choice paper, with a pass mark.

Validation of Certification: Certificates will be awarded on successful completion of the multi – choice paper and is valid for 3 years.  Employers must seek regular in house training to provide appropriate level of competence for all staff involved with substances hazardous to health.
